Who Am I ?

Let anybody ask
What is the task
That's global. Eh!
Wearing a mask!

The task is not glorious
Nor in anyway notorious.
But everyone knows it.
Because it is so obvious!

Gosh! we always wore masks
While doing or undoing tasks.
But they are so very invisible
We never knew we wore masks!

Once, it so happened
A king had a diamond.
He came to Buddha to gift it
Buddha just smiled.

And asked him to drop it.
King unwillingly dropped it.
He stood empty handed.
Buddha again said, drop it.

Flabbergasted, he said,
I don't understand.
I don't have anything.
What do I drop, he asked.

A monk began to explain:-
What Buddha says is plain
He asks you to drop masks
That you wear again & again.

Here no one is emperor
Nor is anyone a beggar.
Everyone is one's own self
Neither inferior nor superior.

If we drop all masks that we wear--
masks of titles, lineage, valour,
that we flaunt so flamboyantly--
answer to 'who am I' becomes easier.

We are not what we appear
to be--sad, glad, or sombre
wearing countless masks--
but a dot of light, soft & clear!

Om Shantih
Ajit Sambodhi.
